It has been confirmed that Lego Rock Band is coming to DS. I must admit it is a bit of a weird combination to have 3D lego guys playing Rock Band, but the Lego characters do look great in minuscule 3D so the DS makes sense.

The tracklist will include such classics as Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs, Monster by The Automatic and Ray Parker Jr’s classic theme from Ghostbusters. The game itself is obviously geared more towards children and families, but Im sure it will be enjoyable enough for everyone to want to play.

It also means you won’t be using any special input devices, except for the DS’ own stylus and buttons. Apparently, using the stylus on expert is an incredibly hardcore challenge. We’ll see about that.

There will be a local multiplayer mode, while the single-player game will see you switching between the instruments in the same way Rock Band Unplugged did so convincingly on PSP recently.

The aim is to get all four of your Lego musicians, be they deep sea divers, jesters or rock chicks, to be ‘happy’. And when they are happy, you get into a band groove. This earns you extra points and Lego studs to customise your characters.

We would have liked to see the game allow you to sing directly into the mic, but sadly that only triggers overdrive mode. You could always pretend you still have to and annoy everyone on the bus anyway.

It’ll be out in time for the Christmas rush this year.

It is my son’s birthday shortly and I think that the write-up has made my mind up regarding exactly what I will buy him.
